No More Sucking on Fingers
Most kids suck their thumb if they are going to suck an appendage. My daughter sucks two of her fingers. I have desperately been trying to get Paige to stop sucking her fingers. So yesterday I told her that she couldn't go to preschool until she had stopped sucking on her fingers. She pulled her fingers out, her face lit up and she said, "Ah-Ha!" She then ran past me and picked up her cabbage patch doll's pacifier and put it in her mouth. I am not letting her go to preschool like this either......

Madison is, by nature, a thumb-sucker. When she was littler (1 - 1 1/2yrs) she would pull pacifiers out of other kids' mouths trying to figure out the fascination with this thing. Now that she has a couple baby dolls with pacifiers, she occasionally sticks those in her mouth when she's playing with them, but she still prefers her thumb when she's really seeking comfort and relaxation! Good luck on getting rid of the habit. Kellen is 9 and still sucks his every once in a while, and a few members of my family (myself included) didn't quit until ages 9-11 or so. There is a certain amount of controversy on this out there now that says that you will cause undue stress by forcing the issue. And, let's face it, I don't know of any adults who still do that; peer pressure is likely to solve the problem for you before too long.
I can SO picture that scenario! Aren't kids so funny with their stubborn personalities??!
My turn...you're tagged my dear.
Calista said it so right...My first two were 8 and 10 when they quit. My next two were 12 when they quit and only one of them had to go to the orthodontist...she had a rake put in twice before she quit. My 5th one only sucked her thumb for about 8 years and the 6th...only a while less than a year. Don't know how I got lucky that time! Good luck, but don't stress over it, the more you make of it the harder it is for both of you.
Emily is almost 6 and sucks her thumb a lot. We've talked about getting the "pink" stuff to put on her thumb, but haven't done anything yet. She's been called a baby by kids at school, but that hasn't made her stop either. I think they have to really want to stop or else it can really be difficult for everyone involved. Let me know if you come across any great solutions!
